About us

The Leconfield Fly fishing Club is a private members’ club started in 1970. The club is operated as a partnership between the club members and the Leconfield Estate on whose grounds the lakes are situated.  The Estate also has a beautiful and exclusive stretch of the River Rother with three miles of mostly double bank fishing, where fly fishing is for wild brown trout and Sea trout. The river is regularly stocked with brown trout throughout the season.

The club offers seasonal membership to fly fish in one of the most private and exclusive locations in the South of England close to the market town of Petworth and the South Downs. There are reduced charges for husband and wife membership and three junior sections. Reciprocal membership of the river Rother Syndicate is also available at an advantageous combined price for members.

A new weekly membership was introduced for 2011.  A weekly member can fish the lakes and river for up to five days from the week selected, and can catch up to 20 fish.  The charge for a week’s membership can be deducted for an upgrade to full membership of the club. For 2012, a weekend membership option has also been added.

Members have exclusive use of nine lakes, six of which are stocked with hard fighting rainbow trout, two with free rising brown trout with a resident head of wild browns, and one lake, Cox’s, offers an opportunity to fly fish for carp. The season runs from about mid March to the end of October. On an annual basis the committee and the Leconfield Estate decide whether to extend the season to the end of November dependent on the weather during the hotter summer months.

The lakes, the river and their surroundings are beautifully maintained by Fisheries Bailiffs and there is ample car parking and fishermans’ huts for recording and weighing the catch. About 4,500 trout are currently stocked annually, throughout the season, with an average weight of 1 ½ lbs with some larger fish.

Each of the three larger lakes is provided with a boat, and flotation vests etc are available in the huts.

The club runs up to two 'bring a prospective new member' fishing days whereby new members can try the waters for themselves, have a barbecue lunch and avail themselves of an S& TA instructor if required.
